Youth Activities

Our youth activities are led by Youth Minister David Shipley, assisted by three of our deacons and staffed by various members. These activities are designed to instill in the hearts of our children and young people a love for the Lord, a desire to live their lives to His glory, and to develop friendships with each other.  Through numerous age-adapted activities we teach our youth God’s word, offer opportunities for Christian service, and provide fellowship and social occasions that are just plain fun.  A strength of our youth program is the level of involvement of the parents of the participants.

Our interest in the young people of the congregation goes beyond age-specific functions.  At any church gathering, you will see exceptional cross-generational involvement.  Our young people converse freely with the “old people”, lead the “little ones”, and participate fully in the life of the church. As a spiritual family, all generations value the presence and contribution of the others.

Here are just a few of the things we do with and for our kids.

Bible classes

Bible classes form the core of our youth program for kids barely out of the cradle right up through high school.  While keeping a practical, life application bent, we are committed to developing a solid Bible knowledge foundation in our young people.

Both preteen and teen groups have devotionals and refreshments at various times, often after Sunday evening services once or twice a month. These are held either at the church building or in homes.

Lock-ins and Kick-Arounds

Several times a year, the teens stay “locked-in” and chaperoned at the church building all night on Friday for various social activities. We also gather together before Wednesday Bible classes for some time to just “kick around”, play games, eat dinner, and have some fun.

Various outings and trips are made through the year.  These range from attending area churches’ youth meetings to days at “Worlds of Fun”.

“Leadership Training for Christ” is an opportunity for the youth to develop a wide range of skills that will enable them and encourage them to serve effectively in the Lord’s kingdom.  After several months of training and preparation (the calendar coincides roughly with the school year), a large percentage of our youth participate at the yearly LTC convention in downtown Kansas City.  Some areas of evaluation are: Bible Bowl, Bible reading, bulletin board design, puppets, song leading, website development, and photography.  Each participant is graded on his or her performance, but not in a competitive comparison against other participants.

Vacation Bible School

Using formats that range from consecutive evenings to one evening a week through the summer months, the entire congregation mobilizes each year for VBS.  Kids study the Bible, do skits, learn spiritual lessons from puppets, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of vacation Bible school.
